Justin Bieber apologised for smoking pot on Saturday Night Live.

The 18-year-old pop star made his debut on the hit US comedy sketch show this weekend.

In one of his final skits Justin alluded to images that circulated around the web last month in which he appeared to be smoking a questionable cigarette.

The skit began with Justin playing the president of Miley Cyrus’ fan club, with an actor playing the female singer all grown up.

The heartthrob's character, Pete, hates Justin Bieber. And the singer takes the opportunity to issue an “apology” for smoking pot in a tongue-and-cheek reference to the incident.

Justin only previously addressed the photos by tweeting that he did not want to “disappoint” his fans.

Elsewhere the evening had a light-hearted tone with cameos from Whoopi Goldberg and Ellen DeGeneres.

Justin opened the show with a monologue that drew squeals and screams from the live television audience.

The skit began with Justin celebrating Valentine’s Day and Black History Month with an original song.

“You're sexy, you're real sexy. But did you also know Phillis Wheatley is the first black woman to publish a book of poems. Is that ever progress,” he awkwardly crooned.

The lyrics seemed to be a comedic attempt to seduce fans in the crowd. Even with ridiculous lyrics the plan worked.

“Girl, you're driving me crazy. But did you also know that Denzel Washington invented the peanut,” Justin continued.

The sketch ended as Justin made Whoopi his Valentine.

The Baby hitmaker later mocked stereotypes of Los Angeles locals in a skit called The Californians.

Viewers were then introduced to a team of the singer’s body doubles, with SNL stars Kenan Thompson, Jay Pharoah and Nasim Pedrad getting some laughs from the crowd as they dressed up like the star.

Justin mocked John Travolta’s Grease character Danny Zuko in another clip.

The singer performed two songs during the programme, an acoustic version of As Long as You Love Me and Nothing Like Us.
