Damon Albarn says Blur’s new album is a “miracle”.
The British band released The Magic Whip in April, after a 12-year absence from the music industry.
And frontman Damon has revealed in a new interview that reuniting with his bandmates once again took some getting used to.
“It’s a miraculous record in many ways,” Damon told British newspaper The Sun.
“The point is everyone has had to really allow this into their heads. It’s like being in a relationship and 15 years after having a family, you suddenly have another child.”
The album was conceived over five days that the band spent in Hong Kong, and marks the return of guitarist and singer Graham Coxon to the group.
Prior to their hiatus from the industry, Blur were at the top of their game, with a host of accolades under their belt. However, Damon says the group became entirely too reliant on each other – and that was a scary prospect for him.
“I don’t think the years of radio silence were really because we didn’t like each other,” he said. “It was just about being too reliant on each other and that was scary.
“When you rely on people and they let you down, it’s terrible. So we re-calibrated ourselves and came back not relying on each other.”
The Magic Whip has been well-received by fans, many of whom are thrilled to see the band back on the stage.
However, Damon adds he is not particularly proud of the record, and it’s just another in a long line of records he has produced.
“I don’t want to sound too blasé but it is just another album,” he said. “For me, that’s what I do.
“I make one album, then I make another. Sometimes they’re really good, sometimes they’re not as good. I put as much into every single one.”
