Last night, 8th November, the 4th annual UK Music Video Awards were held in London’s Leicester Square where a throng of British filmmakers assembled to celebrate creative excellence in British music videos.

Adele, Chase & Status, Depeche Mode, Wiley and JLS are among the British artists whose outstanding music videos from the past year were honoured at the 4th annual UK Music Video Awards, held at the legendary Empire, Leicester Square cinema on November 8th.

International artists who also scooped awards at the event included Arcade Fire, Jay Z and Kanye West, Oh Land, and Manchester Orchestra – whose video for Simple Math, directed by LA duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, picked up The Video of the Year award, and Best International Indie/Rock Video.

The Best UK Pop Video went to Adele for Rolling in the Deep, which was directed by UK director, Sam Brown, who was nominated for three awards. The Best International Pop Video award went to Oh Land’s White Nights, which was directed by Barcelona-based directing team Canada, who, having been nominated for an impressive eleven nominations, also picked up the prestigious Best Director award.

Other British directors spotlighted by the UK Music Video Awards 2011, which celebrates the creativity and technical excellence of music videos made in the past year both in the UK and worldwide, include relative newcomers, Us, who won the Best New Director award and Best UK Urban Video for Wiley’s Numbers in Action. Last year’s ‘Best Director’ winner Daniel Wolfe won the Best UK Dance Video award for Chase & Status’ Blind Faith.

Meanwhile Duran Duran presented The Icon Award to Jonas Akerlund, whose 15 year career has seen him work with the cream of music talent including Madonna, Lady Gaga, The Prodigy, Metallica, Christina Aguilera, U2, Blink-182, P!nk, Rammstein, and Britney Spears, to name but a few.

JLS featuring Tinie Tempah won The People’s Choice Award, in association with VEVO for Eyes Wide Shut. Other winners include the videos for Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs (Best International Alternative Video) and Jay Z & Kanye West’s Otis (Best International Urban Video), both directed by music video legend Spike Jonze. And the controversial video for little-known British indie band Is Tropical’s The Greeks – directed by French directing team Megaforce – won two awards, Best UK Indie/Rock Video and Best Animation in a Video.
