Just occasionally, amidst all the dodgy Beatles cover versions and taped backing music, you come across a busker who's so good, you have to stop in your tracks to listen. Step forward, Cambridgeshire singer-songwriter Tom Copson, whose busking prowess has led to gigs, girlfriends, and slots at this summer's Hop Farm, Secret Garden Party and Cambridge Folk Festivals ' and whose debut album 'Woven', is released on Monday 4th June.
The album's lead single, carpe diem anthem 'Afraid To Fall', has already enjoyed airplay on Radio 6, with Tom Robinson enthusing, 'Wonderful stuff! I can't wait for the album!'
The record's title comes from a lyric referring to people as 'woven souls', and the focus on the complexity of human experience runs throughout the album, moving seamlessly through such varied topics as girls' low self-esteem ('Jenny Has A Gun'), the homeless people he's befriended while busking ('Rainbow'), and his teenage disillusionment when praying with his church youth group couldn't heal his friend's M.E. ('Prayers For Benjamin'). But the record doesn't ignore life's pleasures, shown by second single 'Moments' and the surprisingly sexy 'Treehouse', which begins, 'I'd like to unravel you in a Volkswagen camper.'
Armed with a an incredible four-octave range and a sense of humour, as well as a guitar and omnichord, it's no surprise that Tom's live performances often turn up an unexpected cover version, such as this take on Justin Timberlake's 'Cry Me A River'. As he switches from lower register to his signature falsetto and back again with lightning speed and grace, you wonder whether he could actually record a duets album on his own.
'Woven' is officially released on iTunes on Mon June 4th.
Tom will be playing an album launch gig at the 12 Bar Club in London on July 9th, and has lots of other tour dates around the UK. For more details, visit www.tomcopson.com
