SIMON LORD 'ONE'
SINGLE 'SPACE HAWK' Out now
VINYL LP 'ONE' RELEASED 3rd DECEMBER
'One', the debut solo LP of Simian founder, Findlay Brown Producer and sometime member of The Memory Band, Simon Lord released on Wonderfulsound. It's a Polaroid snapshot of influences; Tim Hardin, Shuggie Otis, Bill Withers, Labi Siffre & Robert Wyatt but stripped down to Guitar, Bass, Vocals & a Rhythm King drum machine all recorded at Marco Nelson's One Inch analogue studio in London.
You may know Simon already from other projects which has included recording alongside Theo Keating (aka Fake Blood / Touche) to form one half of electronic duo The Black Ghosts; their eponymous track Full Moon was used for the opening credits on Twilight. Further ventures have included appearances as guest vocalist for Simian Mobile Disco and personal projects Lord Skywave and Garden.
The release of this LP sees Simon now turn his attention away from digital production to creating an acoustic record tinged with soul, sunshine and psych with the utmost attention to fidelity sound quality and song writing. This, with the help of a beautiful old Gibson guitar that Bert Jansch wanted to buy, the favoured electric piano of Dr John, a Strawberry Field's Mellotron, and a plate reverb that took 5 men to lift.not to mention One Inch's large collection of Vintage Neumann Microphones and immaculate 1' tape machines (more of them in a bit.), produces a record that's full of acoustic soul.
The LP begins with 'Escapism', recorded straight to tape with one microphone that captured a rawness that beautifully contrasts with the ethereal landscape and catchy chorus. 'Better' demonstrates Simon's dance and electronic music background, stripped back to basics and hung on a plunky, wooden Gainsbourg bass line, which takes us to the song 'Space Hawk'. Catchy, Eerie, melancholy, psychedelic 'Space Hawk'.
''I'd say the songs are half wilful escapism and daydreaming and half exploring writing about emotions, but trying not to fall into the pitfalls of sad-song-song. I go into song writing through a love of melody but on this album I was definitely exploring lyrics as well. I wanted to express the surreal and ridiculous part of me, part Ivor Cutler part Jonathan Richman.''
'One' was recorded at One Inch Studios in Borough; the studio of choice for Alex Turner in the recording of the Submarine OST. The studio has an extensive range of vintage microphones and equipment all used to record directly to magnetic tape using classic valve equipment. Marco Nelson's expertise and knowledge ensured that the Neumann microphones were used to the creative maximum.
