You Me At Six

There are similar key moments in the opening tracks of You Me At Six's fourth album; at 2 and a half minutes into the anthemic Too Young To Feel This Old and half way through Lived A Lie. The singalong chant of the opener and the marching band drums of Lived A Lie show exactly where the Surrey band are imagining playing these songs. Stadiums.

It's 10 years since the band were formed in Weybridge, and almost six years since their impressive Take Off Your Clothes that led them to wider audience. Now midway through their twenties the band are starting to grow up - and it will be interesting to see whether the fans grow up with them. The statement of intent of those opening two tracks is followed by the Fall Out Boy-like Fresh Start Fever and Win Some, Lose Some, with heavy guitar and catchy hooks used to full effect.

Recorded in Los Angeles and produced by Neal Avron, there is perhaps a touch too much sheen to the songs, with not a moment to rest, although the likes of Cold Night and Be Who You Are allow a little respite. Guitarist Max Helyer says they want to be a band that are listened to by everyone. It's quite an ambition. Although they are on their way to being one of the best rock bands in the UK, there is still some growing up to do to reach a more mature following. And although there is a delicious swagger to Carpe Dium, there is nothing here as strong as 2011's Loverboy single.
