Paul Carrack

Labelled one of the hardest working people in British music, Paul Carrack ought to be a national treasure. Gifted with a tender soulful voice, aligned with classy songwriting - he has graced songs like Squeeze's Tempted, Mike & The Mechanics' The Living Years and his own stunning Eyes of Blue. Despite this the Sheffield singer is still able to walk down most High Streets without anyone blinking an eye. Given the good nature of Carrack himself, that is probably something he welcomes rather than gets frustrated at - but to his many supporters, it is frustrating that his not rewarded with bigger audiences.

2013 has seen Carrack on the road as part of Eric Clapton's band - and now he is on his own UK tour - before more dates across Europe. He has also found time though to produce his 17th studio album - and this is the lead single. That's All That Matters To Me is a song written about his daughter Merri, who is currently travelling the world. The song echoes concerns of many parents whose children go through this moment - with references of 'spreading wings' and 'finding your own way' but he begins with the fatherly confession "I had some serious doubts".

The sentiment underlines why Carrack is so adored by his fans - it's a gentle confession as opposed to a bitter rant. The words drift along with his usual soulful panache and a gentle rhythm underscored by beautifully understated strings. It will no doubt appear on Radio 2's playlist - but be shamefully ignored by many others.
