Alt-J, formed whilst at Leeds University have gone from strength to strength since the release of their brilliant debut album ‘Awesome Wave’.

Matilda, the 5th single (if you include its original joint release with ‘Fitzpleasure’ in March) from Awesome Wave is certainly one of the most mellow and tranquil songs on the album. The subtlety and splendour in Joe Newman’s voice is obvious throughout. Thom Green’s drumming in parallel caresses Newman’s voice perfectly to create a masterpiece.

Towards the end of the song, the guitaring is so delicate; it provides the perfect outro to the ballad. Its very difficult to compare any of the songs on Awesome Wave because each song offers something different. Matilda may be one of the quietist songs on the album, but that does not mean it is not one of the greatest!
