Catfish have been around for a few years, gathering up awards and some seriously strong press coverage in Blues circles as well as a dedicated following.
The strong buzz that has been going around about this new album and proclaiming Catfish as one of the hottest bands of the decade aren’t wrong: the writing, playing and sheer balls-out power of this band is remarkable.

In Matt Long they have a terrific guitarist and massively powerful vocal presence and he is backed up by Paul Long on keyboards and vocals Adam Pyke on bass and Kevin Yates on drums.

I love to hear a Blues/rock band in full flight and the main sound of the band is encapsulated in Matt’s guitar backed up by vaulting keyboards with the back line of Pyke & Yates powering them along and on tracks such as ‘Up In Smoke’ and ‘Under The Gun’ they absolutely hit every target in their way, Matt’s vocals especially having that wonderful throat-busting rawness that makes so many singers struggle.

They are also capable of taking the speed and volume down: on ‘Soulbreaker’ Matt & Paul swap vocals over a deep and moody acoustic number while ‘Archangel’ is deep and soulful, beautifully treated. The monumental ‘Exile’ has the massive intensity of Metallica at their best – slow, passionate and with an air of danger, it is worthy of closing the album and I should think it will be a stage killer for years to come.

It is such a joy to hear a relatively new band who are as talented and as convincing as Catfish.
