Tonight in Stoke Newington, leftfield musical project Gud Jon played their first London show together. In the surroundings of this old church, with its stained glass windows and religious feel, singer Gudjon Bodvarsson arrives onstage dressed almost in robes, looking very much the part.

Four backing singers, Drums, keys and guitar complete the band, and they open the set with recent single ‘Line Break’. Gudjon singing the refrain “It’s funny when the line breaks”, already showcasing his powerful voice. ‘Uniform’ is up next, with a choir like opening. Perfect for these surroundings. A relatively new song follows, ‘Shelter’, which includes a cello and beat right out of Portishead-era Bristol.

After a stripped down cover song by fellow Icelander &Ocute;lafur Arnalds, Gudjon name checks the nationalities in the room, Russia. Italy. Spain. And of course Iceland which gets the biggest cheer. This song is just piano and cello backing Gudjon. “I try. To keep the balance right”. Gets a great reception from the crowd.

With the next couple of songs, the backing vocals are utilised to great effect, huge choruses. The band are in their stride now. Gudjon looks very comfortable, his vocal delivery both heartfelt and humble. A short story about the meaning of ‘Holmgang’, the title of their forthcoming EP, and all too soon it's all is over.

Final song ‘Moon’ closes the show, with an almost soulful feel the band now have the whole room clapping along. A great ending to a wonderful and intimate gig.
