Having had credible support form LA based indie-pop 5-piece Mighty Six Ninety the night got off to a sweet start. Soon after Joe Carnall led Milburn onto the small but perfectly formed stage of the Bush Hall asking 'Are we gonna rock the casbah or what?'. With that the band tear into a high voltage set that screams of Sheffield band mates Arctic Monkeys with a dose of Libertines added for good measure.
These youngsters are fresh from touring with The Rifles and have so far caused quite a stir. The two guitarists standing either side of the stage, one of which is Joes brother, hold a Rickenbacker (sporting a Rifles T-shirt) and Fender Strat confidently covering off all musical bases. The young crowd are also up for it tonight as is one of the bouncers who towers over the youngsters and throws the odd indiscriminate punch their way, what a wanker. Unluckily the excitable crowd don't band together and give the prick a little of his own medicine, too focused on the spectacle unfolding in front of their eyes, although it would provide the perfect soundtrack for a good solid beating.
When the latest single 'Send In The Boys' rings out the band pull no punches looking like they are really enjoying the night. There is a bit of the Jam in Milburn's sound as well as the pre-Godfathers sound of The Sid Presley Experience. Milburn are out to unite a crowd and tonight that's exactly what they did. As we spill out onto the streets a good night had by all, there's a buzz in the air, a couple of black eyes, and an unusually positive vibe. Great night.
