1989 saw Liza Minnelli teamed up with The Pet Shop Boys and Julian Mendelsohn for her ninth studio album Results. Arriving 12 years after Tropical Nights, it didn't simply place her back on the musical map, it would become one of her most definitive releases. While it was essentially a collection of re-worked contemporary tracks delivered with a Pet Shop Boys twist on Liza Minnelli's unforgettable vocal, it proved to be a release that really shook public perception of Judy Garland's daughter and her ability to really truly be a groundbreaking recording artist in her own right. Although she already boasted an impressive back catalogue, she often found her previous records had been slated by critics and would not achieve the commercial success they deserved. Achieving Gold Status, Results delivered exactly that.

What is most impressive about the new 4-disc extended collection is that it demonstrates just how relevant the sound of Results is still today, even 28 years after it's first release. While a large part of that is no doubt due to the production of The Pet Shop Boys and Julian Mendelsohn, there is no denying that it is having such a dexterous and interesting vocalist centre stage that makes this a winning formula.

For those who have never explored the release previously, we strongly recommend a purchase purely to hear the genius of Liza's Tanita Tikaram cover Twist In My Sobriety, which has brazen beats and an inescapably addictive intensity. The tender haunt of her rendition of The Pet Shop Boys classic Rent adds a compelling edge to the original. However it is the hypnotising dancefloor reworking of the Stephen Sondheim classic Losing My Mind that will have you the most captivated.

The strength of the album alone is enough to warrant a purchase of the 4-disc celebration, but the additional extras are worth exploration. With Don't Drop Bombs (Percapella) feeling rather poignant and Love Pains (Steve Hurley's Radio Edit) begging to be on the Radio 2 playlist, it is the DVD disc that is the most appealing addition. Seeing the phenomenal Liza Minnelli at her peak is unforgettable.

With nearly a decade having passed since her last release, perhaps the re-release of Results begs the question as to when this magical team will reunite for a follow-up record.
