After releasing their debut album ‘Inside In/Inside Out’ and achieving quadruple platinum status in the UK within just one year of being on sale, The Kooks became indie pop-rock legends. Selling out every date on their ‘The Best Of’ tour, The Kooks took to the Cambridge Corn Exchange May 9th to bless their dedicated fans with all their greatest indie anthems.
With an impressive 24 song set list, the famous foursome had blend of all four of their well known and loved albums. Crowd favourites had to be ‘Down’, ‘She Moves In Her Own Way’, ‘Sweet Emotion’ and new single ‘Be Who You Are’, that forced the fans into complete and utter hysteria. Frontman Luke Pritchard had the crowd hooked, with all eyes constantly fixed on his every move. Cockily prancing round the stage, demonstrating a sort of cat walk with his microphone, Pritchard is the ideal frontman for an indie band.
The Kooks sound has definitely changed since their debut release, forcing the quartet to transform originals to suit their modern sound. However their early style still controls each track, keeping all fans happy. Performed acoustically, ‘Seaside’ gave the crowd a break from continuous moshing. Much to the security’s discretion, Pritchard pushed everyone to “get on shoulders”, immediately leading to tens of fans being thrown up in the air. The Cambridge Corn Exchange had been transformed into a mini venue, just from the power of four musicians from Brighton.
The night came to a close with a three track encore, consisting of ‘Around Town’, ‘Shine On’ and ‘Naive’. It was impossible to not sing along to every song and leave without a smile on your face. The Kooks have just announced a UK arena tour starting in November and what’s the bet it’ll be another sold out one?
