There is something very inviting about The Light, the opening and title track from Uncle Lucius’s new album. The deceptively genteel intro leads to a band honky-tonk that just wants you to get up and turn it up.

Coming from Austin, Texas it’s not a given that they’ll play Americana or country music but that’s pretty much what do. Having said that they do vary the routine with the strings and keyboard led Taking in The View, which is one the highlights. There’s also Flood Then Fade Away, the Tuskish drums and imaginative keyboards suggesting that the band are up for experimenting.

Elsewhere End of 118 is a straightforward rocker that doesn’t set the scene for No Time Flat, a breathy and bouncy ditty that does serve as an entrée for the more contemplative Wheels in Motion.
A collective effort this may be but its Kevin Galloway’s resonant lived-in voice which takes charge of every song. However, band and singer really get it together on glacial Nothing to Save.

So while firmly hewn from Southern rock there are more than a few pointers here that they are willing to stretch the genre and themselves.
