Following up on his debut ‘Man Like I’, Natty returns in March with new album ‘Release the Fear’. Having achieved some success with his debut which secured a Top 20 position Natty will be hoping ‘Release the Fear’ finds more commercial success with a sound that has been described as ‘soul-reggae crossover’.

Natty tackles issues ranging from the effects of technology on relationships (‘Street Lights’) to proclamations of faith (I’m Alive). The recording of the album as live adds a charm to it that can often be overlooked in a world of heavily produced pop taking centre stage. However, it’s not always clear how the album has been seven years in the making, it often seems quite effortless.

The album kicks off with ‘I’m Alive’ a life-affirming ode and moves to the imagery-invoking ‘SS Rebel Ship’ which leads us on a rather pleasant sonic journey. Third track ‘Rain Clouds’ is more downbeat but equally evocative and beautifully captures the mood of a down-day.

The album isn’t quite auto-tune free as we hear on ‘Change’, another call to action from Natty. Across the album the clarity of Natty’s lyrics is refreshing, especially when they are as compelling as on ‘Motherland’ when he sings, ‘Going to Africa to build myself a Babylon-proof vest.’ Political themes feature heavily, with messages as simple as to, ‘Stand up in love’ (‘Stand Up’).

The album is certainly an easy listen whilst also thought-provoking, two characteristics that don’t always go hand in hand. Penultimate track ‘Things I Done’ features a child’s vocal which is charming and effective in asking us to consider seriously Natty’s messages.

Natty runs his own record label now, Vibes and Pressure which is putting out the record. He has been touring extensively, across festivals as well as touring the USA supporting Ziggy Marley and the year ahead looks set to get even busier for the London-based artist.

‘Release The Fear’ is out Vibes and Pressure on 18th March 2016.
