Fresh off the heels of a sold out show at LA’s famed Troubadour, Mumiy Troll returned to SXSW, Austin, Texas, to premiere songs from their upcoming English-language album Malibu Alibi at the first ever V-ROX Festival Showcase.

Whilst in SXSW Music-News.com managed to catch Mumiy Troll at The Russian House and grab a quick interview with lead singer Ilya Lagutenko to find out about the latest goings on.

Hailing from Vladivostok, Pacific Russia, Mumiy Troll is led by Ilya Lagutenko. As one of the most popular and prolific indie bands in the post-Soviet states, Mumiy Troll is known for their influential music, successful DIY-indie marketing approaches, unparalleled performances and a constant love of adventure. They recorded their new English-language album, Malibu Alibi, on an ancient Russian tall ship while circumnavigating the globe. The “adventure” nearly brought the band to its knees, but it gave Ilya the opportunity to find new collaborators in every port including Japan, China, South Africa and the USA. A truly imaginative and hard-won sound emerged combining the Russian Taiga, Asian urban jungles, Pacific surf and African sunsets. Ilya and Mumiy Troll are true musical diplomats transcending politics, borders and barriers.

In 2013, Ilya and the Mumiy Troll team launched Vladivostok Rocks Festival, aka V-ROX, based on Ilya’s desire to set the foundation for a new independent music scene in Pacific Russia, opening local ears to more talent from around the globe, and giving international and Russian bands a leg up in a growing Far East Asian region.

Calling the event a “Festival of Discoveries,” Ilya describes V-ROX as a creative laboratory for young talent. “I have neither the desire nor the financial resources to work with international headliners at the V-ROX Festival. It’s much more interesting to expose the audience to ‘new heroes’ – undiscovered bands that appeal across borders.”

V-ROX 2014 saw more than 100,000 people with 80 bands over 3 days with live music on the City Beach, and in the evenings at Mumiy Troll’s eponymous club. More than 250,000 people live-streamed the concerts online. Similar to SXSW, V-ROX also featured a conference with panels, discussions and master-classes led by music industry professionals from around the globe. V-ROX 2015 is set for August 28 through 30 in Vladivostok, Russia, and is open for band submissions and panel ideas at www.vrox.org.
