Australian songstress Mietta grew up surrounded by writers and editors and thus her path as a prolific songwriter was set.

Mietta’s latest single Gone demonstrates her lush tones and unique delivery as well as her willingness to express her innermost thoughts through music.

“Gone is about moving on from difficult times and not looking back, about having the strength and courage to pick up your bundle and keep going,” explains Mietta.

Music News recently caught up with the talented artist to discuss her latest single Gone and what advice she would give to young musicians.

Music News - When did you realize you wanted to pursue a career in music?

Well, I guess I’ve had stars on my eyes since I was about 4 years old. I was a dancer from the age of 4, and constantly performing. I feel that performance of some description was always going to be my path. However it was around the age of 18 when I was accepted into the Victorian College of the Arts for improvisational voice, that I truly felt at home. It’s been that way ever since.

Music News - Who are your musical inspirations?

Stevie Wonder, Paco de Lucia, Diego El Cigala, Esperanza Spalding, Gretchen Parlato, Cameron de la Isla, Tomatito, Punch Brothers, Casuarina, Mariza, Elis Regina, Emily King, Baden Powell, Joni Mitchell, Milton Nascimento, Victor Jara, Tomatito, Sting (just to name a few) and all of my extremely hard-working and gifted musical friends here in Melbourne and around the world.

Music News - Where do you draw inspiration from when you write songs and what’s your favorite part about the process?

It mainly starts from being very inspired by an artist I’m listening to at the time. I’ll constantly be learning the song and singing their melodies and I usually come up with versions of, or variations of their songs and melodies. It can also be, and quite often be, a rhythmic inspiration too. Rhythm and different rhythmic styles or feels play a huge part in my song writing.

There are many parts of the process that I really enjoy. Firstly it’s when an idea or series of ideas is solidified, and cemented into something tangible. And of course hearing the final piece played by musicians for the first time.

Music News - I understand that you just released your new single Gone. What can you tell me about that?

Well, it’s very exciting. It’s my first big release, and I finally feel like I’m musically presenting myself to the world the in a way that I’ve always wanted and that I’m very proud of. I guess I haven’t been ready to this up until this point.

Music News - Considering that the music industry can be fickle. What advice would you give young musicians?

Well, firstly as it is such difficult industry to make a profit from, make sure it’s always something you love doing and that gives you great joy. Work hark, and keep practicing. Find something else that you enjoy doing too that may elevate the financial burden of being a musician.

Music News - What is you favorite song to belt out at the bar/in the car/for karaoke?

Right now it’s Chandelier by Sia. Jeez she’s good!

Music News - If you could perform with anyone, either living or passed, who would it be?

Stevie Wonder/Sting/Diego el Cigala
