‘Start To Run’, ‘Hardway’ and ‘Recover’, the three fast flowing singles so far released by energetic East London upstarts ‘Dexters’ were the statements of intent for what had become one of my most eagerly anticipated LP’s of 2014. Released last week, ‘Shimmer Gold’ is a massive album which is set to propel ‘Dexters’ to the forefront of British guitar music. Ten tracks of vocal led British guitar driven anthems energised by youth and enthusiasm.

The raw energy which characterises the bands live performances is immediately evident with the catchy and high tempo ‘Cloudfest’ and continues with ‘They’re Blind’. Next comes a double bill of single releases ‘Recover’ and ‘Start To Run’ epitomising lead vocalist Tom Rowlett’s outstanding ability to pen catchy tunes with big, anthemic choruses. The rabble rousing ‘Worth Your While’ contrasts the slower starting ‘Oceans’ and more contemplative and thought provoking title track ‘Shimmer Gold’

My personal fave is the intense ‘I Can’t Sleep’ where the band have taken inspiration from their more eclectic musical influences whilst staying loyal to their british guitar sound

This is far and away the best album so far released to date in 2014. With tunes such as ‘These Scenes’ (next single?) and ‘Disappearing Act’ not included on here, there’s plenty more to come from the Hoxton five piece. The band are on the last leg of their UK tour. Catch them in Nottingham, Norwich, Oxford or London this week before they fly off for some German dates – www.dextersband.co.uk
