St Patrick’s day at the Roundhouse was a classy affair with Imelda May at her rockin’, bluesy best. Dressed in monochrome striped pedal pushers with her statement quiff and ruby lips, she was the perfect blend of fifties sweetness and contemporary bite.
With that understated Irish charm, it didn’t take long to get the crowd laughing, ‘I’ve just been in the states and they always call out I love you Imelda! And I know I should do the Mariah Carey thing and say, I love you too but I’m Irish, I just wanna shout back – You don’t even know me!’
Inviting snowy haired John Sheahan of Dubliners fame to join her on stage for ‘Kentish Town Waltz’ from her album Mayhem - you’d have to be a hard one not to be touched by the pair.
Imelda stormed the roundhouse with a set spiced with old favourites and smoking tunes from her new album ‘Tribal’ set to be released June 2014. Highlights, included ‘Go tell the Devil I don’t wanna go to hell’ and old favourites, ‘Johnny got a Boom Boom’ and ‘Inside Out.’ Something tells me it’s going to be a big year for Imelda May.
Supporting act Mundy deserves more than a mention for whipping the Monday evening crowd into life with his natural humour, raw vocals and foot-stomping rhythms. Still flying from his recent gig at the Whitehouse, Mundy and backing band ‘Cronin’ (who he borrowed for the night) performed with irresistible spontaneity and vigor. For those who didn’t know his hits ‘July’ and Galway Girl’ they sounded as fresh as ever. Looks like Mundy’s English fan-base is set to grow.
