Firebrick is the new tune from 24-year-old Bedford based, emerging talent S.O.S (Sophie DeBattista).
Written and co-produced by Sophie herself, the track has been brilliantly mastered by Shane the Cutter(Nathan Fake, Luke Abbott, Blu Mar Ten, DJ Shadow). This track is the final single to be taken from the S.O.S debut EP Edges of The Mind, a collection of songs featuring her alluring, dynamic voice blended perfectly with distinctive synths, contemporary beats, hooky lyrics and choruses that can be sung after the first listen. Previous releases from the EP include Bittersweet, Silent Witness, Bloodline and Like A Flower.
Firebrick is a tune that captivates the listener in the first few beats with instrumentation that merges unusual, quirky sounds with intriguing vocal samples that truly set the tone for this striking single.Born on the Mediterranean Island of Malta, Sophie’s passion for music soon grew and at a young age she was scouted to be a resident singer on Maltese National Television. Her love of music knew no bounds, and by the age of 18, Sophie followed her British roots to the UK where she was soon spotted by The Mayor Of London’s Culture Team and awarded a scholarship to study at The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (ICMP) where she graduated with a first-class BA in Songwriting. This continued to fuel her passion for music and encouraged the development of the S.O.S signature sound, which can regularly be heard around the live music circuit in London and beyond. Having started her UK music career in January 2013 playing to just a handful of people in Hammersmith, career highlights have since included slightly more prestigious gigs such as opening for US superstar Ciara (Indigo2), supporting Ariana Grande and Take That (O2 Arena VIP Lounge) and playing at high profile events London Music Awards (Roundhouse Camden) and Pride London (Trafalgar Square) to name a few. Then towards the end of 2015, Sophie’s music took an exciting turn as she began to experiment with music production, which lead to the young songwriter having complete control of her sound.
Her quirky electro-pop sound draws influences from the likes of Halsey, Lorde, MARINA, Anne Marie, Jess Glynne andJorja Smith.Sophie explains the new tune’s backstory; “Firebrick was inspired by a young woman who I’ve known for many years. The song tells the story of how she hasn’t had the best experiences when it comes to the men in her life. Although she’s been cursed with this bad luck, the silver lining in the narrative is that no matter how bad it’s been and no matter how many men have tried to control or deflate her, she comes back fighting each time. Firebrick is an intense shade of red, so in the chorus I make the comparison between a ‘washed out firebrick tone’ and this girl’s passionate, fiery personalty which is slowly fading away by these men.”.
