Sundara Karma today unveil the video for their brand new single, ‘Illusions’ (Chess Club / RCA). The video, directed by frontman Oscar Pollock, is another tantalizing insight into the his singular creative vision. Comprising of regal costumes, a Snow White-esque mirror scene, an evil joker, and some seriously sinister chemical concoctions being cooked up amongst billows of smoke throughout, Illusions is an ethereal showcase full of grit and grandeur.
Unveiled last week, ‘Illusions’ is the first glimpse of a bold new direction for the Reading four piece, a wonderfully twisted, psyched out groove that melds the epic ambition of Arcade Fire or Wild Beasts with the classic songwriting flourishes of Bowie or Kate Bush.
Their first new music since critically acclaimed 2017 debut album ‘Youth Is Only Ever Fun In Retrospect’, ‘Illusions’ is the sound of a band growing into the stature their songwriting ability demands, stepping out from the pack and embracing a sound that effortlessly brings together the left field with hulking great pop hooks. Debuted during their knockout headline slot at Neighbourhood festival in Manchester on Saturday 6th October, ‘Illusions’ has already heightened fans expectations for Sundara Karma’s eagerly anticipated second album, due for release in 2019.
Lead singer Oscar Pollock says: ‘The song is a groovy slow pumper, our best effort ever at being both sensual and enlightening. In times of horror and uncertainty we need love and positivity and the ability to recognise that everything around us is temporary. I like to think we are not separate from one another, every single thing we do affects the people and the world around us. From macro to micro - from our inner world to the outer world. Easier said than done and much easier sung than said.’
Having headlined Brixton Academy and drawn one of the weekend’s biggest crowds on the Second Stage at Reading Festival 2017, the band last week announced an intimate, Halloween underplay show at Omeara. Selling out in a matter of minutes, the show will be a rare opportunity for those lucky enough to bag tickets to see the band in such intimate confines.
‘Illusions’ is out now and co-produced by Stuart Price (Madonna, The Killers, Les Rhythm Digitales) and Kaines (Alex from Everything Everything).
