Recently on Beats 1, Zane Lowe and Diplo caught up about new Major Lazer track ‘Cold Water’ with Justin Bieber and MØ, his World Record came from DJ Khaled with anticipation high for his new album, Major Key.
On his the new Major Lazer song “Cold Water” feasting Justin Bieber and MØ:
well we tried to debut it on our beats 1 lazer sound show on saturday but since it comes out on friday zane lowe got the exclusive. you trump us so it’s ok. but yeah I’m happy to getting some stuff together. The summer’s been kind of slow I feel like for some music so we thought ‘let’s put out a single’ we gotta give the people something.
Drake and Rihanna killed it this year but that record came out a while ago there hasn’t really been a summer vibe. For me ‘One Dance’ has ben the biggest record of the year, for me it’s the coolest pop record. I feel like let’s come through and join the squad.
On the record getting leaked prior to the release:
We tried our best to have a giant international release with all of these different partners and we’re independent still so it’s really difficult to do all that. But of coarse China decided to play it on the radio. Shoutout to all my Chinese fans tuning in we love you guys, you got the exclusive.
On working with MØ and Justin Bieber together again:
When we did “Where Are Ü Now?” it was two years ago and I feel like that came out of nowhere. It was such a weird thing and such a weird record it didn't really pick up steam for a couple months . It really helped to reinvent as much as me and Skillex as much as Justin it was just a good phenomenon I was so happy to be a part of it.
This record has a lot of moving parts Ed Sheeran helped write the record with us, Benny Blanco and they’ve also had a big hit with Justin last year. It’s like a big family we all do it together. We’re all just people that worked together on the last year and then MØ came in because we love her so much we just want to put her on as many records on the new Major Lazer album as possible.
On any news for the next Major Lazer album:
every time i tell people the features on the record they always change because I’m only working on major lazer on that project right now and working on things that can be really fresh but I always give those records away. We did Beyonce, took a couple of songs from us ended up being on her album, another one from The Weeknd is gonna be on his album. Sometimes they all just chip away and they’re all gone. The only people we give records to are people we love. Beyonce, The Weeknd, maybe something for Nicki Minaj. We always try to give those records to people and the ones they don't’ understand maybe we’ll take ourselves. That’s how ‘Lean On’ happened. It’s like forty records I’m working on right now. So I don’t know which ones gonna be which.
Definitely we have Usher on it, Mo’s back on songs, we have a song with Sam Hunt which is very unusual but I love him, Travis Scott, I don’t even know I have to go back. Sia is on a couple ideas but one of the records might be her record. She’s definitely background vocals on a song.
On having a sort of Major Lazer song factory:
Well you know all these writers - Ed sheeran is a star but he’s also a writer. i’m just really friends with all the writers. Sia and me came up in the same world songwriting and I wrote many songs with her before she became a bonafide pop star herself. Tove Lo did something amazing for us. I love her we did a bunch of stuff together, Tinashe, I might have a demo with everybody but I’m not sure who’s gonna make the cut.
On when they’re hoping to get the record done:
We want to put that [Cold Water] out and immediately put go back to work come up with another single for August then another single probably the end of the year then hopefully put an album out in January. That’s our plan.
I’m just out here trying to do it while people are still listening to the music and hopefully get as much music done in my little window I got.
