Pop star Selena Gomez has shared a cryptic message on Instagram just hours after getting tearful on stage in Indonesia.

The singer celebrated her 24th birthday on Friday night (22Jul16), but on what should have been a happy occasion, Selena seemed more than a little out of sorts.

"Tonight I felt extremely unauthentic, unconnected to both my myself and my music," she wrote in a screenshot of a message she wrote on her iPhone notes app, which she posted to the social networking site. "I've never really felt like my materials, wardrobe or a video could define me. I act on a moment and fear something that hasn't happened. I'm stagnant, I stay still and don't just sit with myself first and ask, 'Is this where I am, whole heartedly?'"

Selena added she has always told the truth, and is always true to her word, but she needs to "rethink some areas of my life creatively and personally. Had to get that out."

The star wrote in the caption that she was not trying to be negative, and was thankful for every single moment she had spent in Indonesia, no doubt to reassure anyone who was at the concert her feelings weren't about them directly.

Her cryptic post came after she got emotional on stage ahead of singing track Kill 'Em With Kindness as part of her Revival tour.

"The next song, before I go home, is a song that's so important to me," she said, wiping away tears. "Because I get really frustrated, I get stupid sometimes, I say things that I don't mean. Or that come out wrong just because I care so badly."

While it wasn't clear to the audience what she was referring to, Selena added that no war in anger is ever won and she had to believe people can love each other and always be kind "no matter what it takes in us."

"I believe that we can do that, no matter what," she added.
