Meghan Trainor is still a little apprehensive about meeting with fans following the shocking murder of fellow singer Christina Grimmie last month (Jun16).
Christina was shot and killed by an obsessed fan at a meet-and-greet in Florida in June (16) and Meghan was so shaken by the tragedy, she initially considered halting all in-person interactions with devotees.
"I was like (to her management team), 'Guys, I can't do this anymore,'" she tells Billboard.com. "Because of (Christina)."
However, the All About That Bass singer explains she knew it was important to keep that personal connection with her fans, despite her fears.
"Last show I did in Buffalo (New York), I went out after," she says. "It kind of slowed down and everyone was leaving. I went out and said hi to some fans. My heart was beating and I was like, 'You got this, you're OK.' And I saw my team circled around us subtly. I was like, 'There's my manager, there's my security, there's my brother, and there's my assistant, and they're all protecting me.' And I was like, 'We can do this.' And we did it until the last person left."
"Sometimes I get to meet real personal fans that have written me an essay and they want to just give it to me and so I love those moments," she adds. "But it was scary."
Meghan first heard of Christina while she was still in high school, and she praises the tragic singer for connecting with her as a fan.
"I knew of her really well," she adds. "In high school, I would always follow her YouTube page and I commented in high school, and she commented back, and I was like, 'Mom! A celebrity commented on my page!' I was freaking out. I was stoked."
"I met her at some radio show I did like, my first year (in the industry)," she continues. "And I was like, 'Dude, I followed your YouTube and you commented!' She was like, 'What? You know who I am?' She was so sweet."
