Gwyneth Paltrow can't believe she's more despised than Chris Brown.

The 43-year-old actress was dubbed the world's most hated star in 2013 by editors at America's Star magazine ahead of the likes of Chris, Kristen Stewart and Kim Kardashian.

And when asked about the unflattering accolade, Gwyneth was expressed disbelief that she finished above the Loyal singer, who was at number 20 on the list, well below the actress despite admitting assaulting his then girlfriend Rihanna in 2009.

"First of all, I was like, 'I'm the most hated celebrity? More than, like, Chris Brown?' What did I do?" she told BBC News show Hardtalk.

The star's love of healthy living and expensive lifestyle choices are well documented on Gwyneth's website Goop.com, which allows consumers to emulate the star's lifestyle.

Hardtalk presenter Stephen Sackur put it to Gwyneth that the hatred might be due to her making people feel bad about themselves, to which she replied, "All I can do is be my authentic self, and if you know me, then you know who I am, and that I have fun and eat and am so appreciative for my life. But I think there are things about me that make people draw conclusions."

The Iron Man star also attempted to counter accusations that her success was due to her privileged upbringing as the daughter of film director Bruce Paltrow and actress Blythe Danner.

"My parents did well, and I was able to go to a fantastic school, and we grew up in New York City, but the minute I left my college to try to pursue acting, my father was really supportive," she explained.

"But he said, you know, 'You are completely on your own.' So, he never gave me anything. I never had any supplementation, he never helped me with my rent, I never had a trust fund."

The indignant actress added, "So the idea that I am spoiled or that I didn't work for what I have is just not accurate, but I can see how somebody might have that perception."

One person she is on good terms with despite their divorce is ex-husband Chris Martin, with whom she maintains a close friendship after announcing they were splitting in 2014.

Gwyneth explained to Sackur that despite the end of their romantic relationship, she still had strong feelings for Chris and they were loving parents to their children Apple, 12, and 10-year-old Moses.

"My children know that we're in a loving family," she said. "And I adore their father even though we're not in a romantic relationship."
