Bobby Brown knew he he had to write his memoir in order to move forward in his life after a series of poor judgment calls and tragedies.
The New Edition star has opened up about his life and career in Every Little Step, and in the book, Bobby writes about his former marriage to late singer Whitney Houston, his sexual relationships and his substance abuse issues. The 47-year-old explains the writing process helped him heal.
"I don't think I could have (written) it 10 years ago, just living through everything I've been through and trying to move forward in life; I had to get it all out," he told U.S. chat show The View on Monday (13Jun16). "Everything that bothered me, that was heavy on my heart, on my soul. I decided why don't I just sit down and get it all out, so that I could move on with life."
Bobby sat down for an interview with U.S. newswoman Robin Roberts for a 20/20 news special last week (ends10Jun16), revealing Whitney, who died in 2012, took cocaine before their wedding in 1992. Following the interview, Whitney's mother, Cissy, called the special "disturbing" and criticised Bobby for failing to protect her daughter during their 14-year marriage.
He has also faced criticism for his candour in the memoir.
"I don't think I wrote about other people," he said. "I think if you read the book you'll notice that I speak only from my point of view, only from what I've experienced, only from what I've been through...," he said. "If you read through the whole book you'll see out of everything that I've been through, this is how I became the man that I've become today, to be able to be the father that I am to six other children, other than my daughter that passed. To be a better man, I had to get it all out."
However, he insists he has no hard feelings towards Cissy after she attacked him for what he said about her daughter during the 20/20 programme.
"She's a mother that lost her daughter and her grandchild, I lost my ex-wife and my daughter," he continued. "We both have our feelings about what has happened and I'm pretty sure she's in pain just like I'm in pain, but I don't take judgment against her or what shes feeling.
"I tried to protect (Whitney) as much as I possibly could...," he added. "You really can't protect someone when they don't what the help like you want the help. I wanted help so bad that we went our separate ways. I don't blame her, I don't blame her mother, I don't blame anybody."
