R&B star Ciara has lost her battle for sole custody of the son she shares with ex-fiance Future.

The Goodies singer faced off with her rapper ex in a California court on Monday (16May16), when she outlined her claim for their kid, also named Future, who turns two on Thursday (19May16).

During the hearing, Ciara and her lawyer blasted the hip-hop star, real name Nayvadius Wilburn, accusing him of being an absent father and insisting he is not fit to care for their child, reports TMZ.com.

However, the judge was not convinced and rejected her petition for sole custody, ruling in favour of Wilburn's request for joint custody.

Ciara and Wilburn parted ways in 2014, shortly after welcoming their baby. Their split has turned increasingly nasty in recent months, with the 30-year-old mum slapping her ex with a $15 million (£10.4 million) defamation lawsuit in February (16), accusing him of knowingly making false and defamatory statements about her parenting skills on social media.

She alleges his comments were aimed at trying to ruin her reputation.

Wilburn fired back with a countersuit, claiming his remarks couldn't have caused her professional damage because her career has been on the decline in the past few years, with her last album, 2015's Jackie, proving to be a commercial flop.

He is also asking a judge to ban Ciara from speaking negatively about him in public.

Both lawsuits are pending.

Ciara has since moved on from her romance with the rapper and she is now engaged to American football star Russell Wilson, who proposed to the singer in March (16).
