Sony Music's lawyer has broken his silence following the company's victory in its contract dispute with Kesha, insisting he and his clients are powerless to dump her deal.
As fans of the singer plan a rally outside the headquarters of Sony Music in New York on Friday (26Feb16) to protest Kesha's courtroom defeat last week (19Feb16), the company's legal eagle Scott A. Edelman has opened up about the drama.
He told the New York Times the company couldn't give Kesha what she wanted, as executives are "not in a position to terminate" the contract the singer signed with producer Dr. Luke a decade ago.
"Sony is doing everything it can to support the artist in these circumstances, but is legally unable to terminate the contract to which it is not a party," Edelman added.
The initial 2005 contract was between Kesha and Kasz Money, Dr. Luke's company. From there, Luke brought the agreement to Sony Music subsidiary RCA/Jive in 2009, signing what amounts to a distribution deal.
The agreement currently belongs to Kemosabe Records, a Sony Music subsidiary set up by Dr. Luke.
Kesha claims he sexually and emotionally abused her and therefore she can no longer work with him. Under the terms of the contract, the Tik Tok hitmaker insists she is restricted from working with anyone else.
Luke, who has denied all allegations of abuse against Kesha, insists the singer is free to work with whoever she likes under the terms of the contract she signed with him back in 2005.
