Lemmy: In His Own Words takes a look back through the BBC vaults at one of rock music's most charismatic frontmen, divulging performances and interviews from a 50-year hell-raising music career.
Lemmy is credited with introducing punk sounds into the heavy metal mix, paving the way for a generation of thrash metal and speed metal followers. He was a one-off who walked it like he talked it, and while he embodied the rock’n’roll lifestyle up until his recent death, his influence as a musician and songwriter should not be underestimated.
This programme offers Lemmy's own overview of his journey through interviews he gave for various BBC documentaries and programmes including I'm In A Rock 'N' Roll Band! (2010), Forever Young: How Rock 'n' Roll Grew Up (2010), Heavy Metal Britannia (2010), Riverside (1982), Later... With Jools Holland (2000), The Young Ones (1984), French & Saunders (1990) and Whistle Test (1985), along with classic Motörhead Top of the Pops studio performances and some material never previously broadcast.
James Stirling, Editor for BBC Music, says: “Lemmy was a colossal figure in British music and he had a unique approach to both his songs and the industry he found himself in. There was a smart sense of humour at the heart of everything, something clearly demonstrated through his interviews and performances we’ve uncovered from the BBC Music archive.”
In the programme, Lemmy says: "Do you go out like a little candle? Or do you re-incarnate? Do you go and live with Jesus?... I don't think so."
Interviewer: “So what do you think?”
Lemmy: "I think it is all wonderful and we all go and live in Snowden at the top by the bar. I'm going to hell anyway, that's where the pool tables are. You can't imagine a pool table in heaven can you?"
