Nile Rodgers' belief that the 1983 David Bowie album he produced is cursed has been reaffirmed in the wake of legendary singer's death.
The Rebel Rebel singer passed away earlier this month (Jan16), after secretly fighting an 18-month battle with cancer. Chic singer Nile is just one of David's A-list friends who has shared their grief, but he's also thinking about the passing in another context.
"In my autobiography I talk about the curse of Let's Dance," Nile told Britain's The Metro newspaper of the '80s record.
Musicians who worked on the album Tony Thompson, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Chic co-lead Bernard Edwards have all died too.
The news of David's passing is also proving hard for Nile to digest as his mother Beverly Goodman is currently unwell.
"It's bizarre to me, but it hasn't set in because I have problems with my own family," Nile sighed. "My mom is quite ill. I spent five days with her in Los Angeles and had just come home when someone called about David. The next day my mum was admitted to hospital."
The whole situation still feels surreal for 63-year-old Nile, who regarded David as both a friend and colleague. Let's Dance proved to be one of David's most successful albums, producing tracks Let's Dance, Modern Love and China Girl.
Nile was hoping to collaborate with the megastar once more and still feels like his old friend could phone at any moment.
"I feel like I'm waiting for David to call me to do the next record because I don't feel like he's gone," he said. "It's breaking my heart."
Nile will no doubt pay tribute to David this summer (16), when he brings his Fold Festival to London in June. Chic, John Newman and Angie Stone will all be performing.
