Pop star Charlie Puth has insisted he is just good friends with fellow singer Meghan Trainor after the pair kissed while on stage at the American Music Awards (AMAs).

The annual ceremony took place in Los Angeles on Sunday (22Nov15), with Meghan and Charlie taking to the stage for a smoldering rendition of their duet Marvin Gaye. As they came to the end of their performance the pair locked lips, with Meghan holding Charlie's face and Charlie grabbing on to her butt. While the smooch sent the audience wild, Charlie has insisted it was all for show.

"There was a lot of making out back stage," he laughed when quizzed about it, according to Just Jared. "The dancers were making out and I'm sure some of the other dancers were making out. I think that's it though.

"We're friends and it's all part of my whole vision when I made Marvin Gaye, for people to hear the record and spontaneously make out with each other. That was the goal tonight for the live show."

The ceremony was fraught with unusual moments, many of which involved its host Jennifer Lopez. She kicked things off by performing a medley of some of 2015's biggest tracks, among them Ed Sheeran's Thinking Out Loud, Beyonce's 7/11 and Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars' Uptown Funk. It was the rendition of Nicki Minaj's Anaconda which sent social media into a meltdown though, as one of the star's backing dancers got so energetic with her dance moves that she split her pants and revealed her bottom. On top of that, Nicki was sitting in the audience and seemed less than impressed when Jennifer began covering her song - as the camera panned to the rapper, she was seen glaring and looking irritated.

It wasn't all bad news for the host though, as her ex-boyfriend Puff Daddy was impressed by her hosting and took the time to give her a shout out as he presented the Collaboration of the Year prize to Skrillex & Diplo featuring Justin Bieber for Where Are U Now. "Can we give it up for Jennifer Lopez one time?" he asked onlookers.

It was also a good night for Ariana Grande, who picked up the Favorite Female Pop/Rock Artist, much to the delight of her grandmother, who was her date for the evening.

"I think I owe a lot of this to my Nonna, who made who made sure to remind me that she voted," Ariana said on stage. "She goes, 'Ariana, I went on the computer. I voted, so I think you'll win.'"
