Country singer Blake Shelton is to host the Nickelodeon 2016 Kids' Choice Awards.

The 39-year-old shared the news during an appearance on the Today show on Monday (09Nov15), telling hosts Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford that presiding over the event is the pinnacle of success.

Blake also shared how he explained the gig to his agent, saying: "I wanna do this thing with kids. It's fun. I wanna get slimed."

The annual awards ceremony honours the year's biggest television, movie and music acts and is voted for by Nickelodeon viewers. Guests and winners are often covered in the network's trademark green goo and as the host, Blake is expecting his fair share of gunge.

"I've been on countless stages throughout my life, but none have promised the madness, excitement and endless slime as Nick's Kids' Choice Awards, which is undoubtedly the ultimate party for kids," he added in a statement. "There is only one team here, and it's Team Kids' Choice so bring it on Nickelodeon!"

The 2016 Kids' Choice Awards will air on Nickelodeon on 12 March and Blake follows in a long line of famous faces who have presented the ceremony, including Nick Jonas, Mark Wahlberg and Jack Black, who has held the post on three different occasions.

Blake is no stranger to hosting duties though, as he fronted popular comedy show Saturday Night Live back in January and was a roaring success.

He's also comfortable in front of the cameras thanks to his work as a coach on The Voice, which he has been part of since it began in 2011.

The current line-up consists of Blake, Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine, Pharrell Williams and Gwen Stefani.

Last week (ends06Nov15), Gwen's agent confirmed that she and Blake are dating after weeks of speculation surrounding the pair.

"Gwen and Blake are longtime friends who have very recently started dating," they said, just months after Gwen announced her plans to divorce husband Gavin Rossdale.

Blake also split from wife and fellow country singer Miranda Lambert in the summer (15) after four years of marriage.
