Police in England have once again interviewed Cliff Richard over links to an unnamed 1980’s era sex crime.
South Yorkshire authorities first searched Richard’s home in August 2014 looking for evidence in a case that alleged Cliff’s involvement with a 16-year-old male during a Billy Graham crusade at the Sheffield United’s soccer stadium in 1985. Cliff, who was out of the country at the time, returned to England to be questioned “under caution”, meaning that the interview was recorded and could be used in any future trial.
In February, it was said that the investigation had “increased significantly in size” with the single incident having grown to multiple allegations although, at the time, it was not clear if they all came from a single person or more than one.
Earlier this week, Richard was again questioned by police, this time over two additional people who have come forward since the original allegation went public.
A spokesman for Richard said “Sir Cliff Richard voluntarily met with and was interviewed by members of South Yorkshire Police. He was not arrested or charged, nor has he ever been. He co-operated fully with officers and answered the questions put to him. Other than restating that the allegations are completely false and that he will continue to co-operate fully with the police, it would not be appropriate for Sir Cliff to say anything further at this time.”
According to the Telegraph, sources close to the singer said that he was never alone with either new victim at the time that they claim they were assaulted.
Detectives have said that they would like to make a final decision on the case before Christmas.
Richard has had 74 top ten hits in his native England including sixteen number ones. In the U.S., he hit the top ten with Devil Woman (1976 / #6), We Don’t Talk Anymore (1979 / #7) and Dreamin’ (1980 / #10).
