Singer Demi Lovato can never forget how dangerous the spiral is following her battle with alcohol, depression and bulimia.

The Cool for the Summer star entered a treatment facility in 2010 to deal with her mental health, as well as the eating disorder and self-harming. While she is in a good place now, the 23-year-old has never been afraid to open up about how she self-medicated with drugs and alcohol to deal with her issues before she got help. Demi has channelled her experiences into her new album Confident, and ahead of its release on 16 Oct (15) she has been sharing videos with her fans which explain the meaning behind each track.

“The first thing I think about is going back to a time when I was engaging in self-destructive behaviours,” she said of third song on the album Old Ways, according to Billboard. “But it’s also like, now being at an age where I’ll go out to a club and I’ll look around the room, and there’s a bunch of people drinking, partying … it looks glamorous."

Demi admitted that in that moment she thinks that she’s been in recovery so long that she may not have a problem anymore. She also thinks about how much fun everyone looks like they’re having, but quickly pulls her thoughts back in check.

“I easily remember how dangerous that spiral is, when you’re the type of person that lets it take over your life,” she continued. “When you look forward and you write a new chapter in your book, that’s when the story really begins.”

The first single off the album was Cool for the Summer, and it was a major hit around the world. Demi is proud of what the song achieved, as it marked her new outlook on life and her music.

“I thought it was an awesome representation of where I’m headed,” she added. “I think for so many years, I cared too much about what people thought. Now I can just be who I am. I can be open.”
