Justin Bieber has admitted his ex Selena Gomez serves as a muse for his new music.

The superstar pair engaged in an on-off romance for several years, having confirmed their relationship in 2011 when they attended the Vanity Fair Oscar party together.

They officially broke up in recent months and although both parties have moved on, Justin reveals songs on his forthcoming album are deeply inspired by the experiences he shared with Selena.

“I think a lot of my inspiration comes from [Selena],” he revealed during the On Air with Ryan Seacrest radio show on Thursday. “It was a long relationship that created heartbreak and created happiness and a lot of different emotions that I wanted to write about. There’s a lot of that on this album.”

Fans have been highly anticipating Justin’s new LP, as his third studio record Believe was released in 2012.

And although several years have gone by since Believe hit the shelves, Justin isn’t in a hurry to release fresh music.

“I’m not in a rush,” he said, noting a release date hasn’t been set yet. “I just want to create the best piece of art that I can create, something that’s really near and dear to my heart. I know there’s a lot of stuff that I’ve been going through over the past few years. I just really want to bleed it on this record.

“I just want people to know that I’m not playing around, I’m not doing a record that’s cookie-cutter, or doing something that I think people want to hear. I want to do something that I know that I can feel and people are going to feel it through my music. I’m pretty silent about what I’ve been going through, and just growing up in this life is hard. So I want to translate that.”
