Cosmopolitan has an exclusive interview with Niall and Liam from One Direction in the October issue (on sale 4thSeptember) and we have some key quotes.

They reveal their private jet smells of McDonalds, why cow poo reminds them of home, why happiness is being undercover and that they have Cosmopolitan on their plane.

On discussing their new women’s fragrance, You & I - what do you like a woman to smell of?

LIAM “We all wanted something that was fruity, but not too in-your-face.
You don’t want to go in for a cuddle and then get a big whiff of ‘Whoah, what’s that!’”

NIALL “Not too explosive. It’s nice to have just a little touch of it.”

What scents do you wear yourselves?

LIAM “Mine, I robbed off my dad when I was little, called Jean something. Jean Paul Gaultier! The blue one with the little stripy shirt.”

NIALL “From 13, I think, I started wearing Armani Mania. It’s Hugo Boss at the minute… Hugo Boss is the one with Ryan Sheridan [Reynolds, Niall!] in the ad. It’s got a silver top and it’s got ‘Boss’ written down the side.”

LIAM “Thanks for that vivid description!”

What does a private plane smell like?

LIAM “Ours usually smells of McDonald’s.”

NIALL “Literally.”

LIAM “Yes, because that’s what we always order for the flight. Although we’ve switched to sushi now, and er, some chicken teriyaki.”

What’s the worst smell?

LIAM “When you come in through the back of hotels, I’m not being funny, but the trash bins there… We need to raise this with our people!”

Are there certain scents that remind you of home?

NIALL “Yeah, cow poo.”

LIAM “I was going to say the same. We both live close to the countryside and…”

NIALL “I’m Irish.”

LIAM “He’s from Ireland, did you guess? Where I live there are farms nearby that you can always smell…”

NIALL “I’m from, like, the lake district of Ireland so there’s the smell of cows and sheep and fresh-cut grass. Like golf courses!”

Would you ever change your look for a woman?

LIAM “No. If she doesn’t take you for who you are then there’s no point.”

NIALL “I’d wear something particular if she asked me to.”

LIAM “Sometimes I get Soph [his girlfriend] to do a bit of shopping for me, like, ‘If you want to see me in anything…’ So then she goes off to the lingerie section.”

What advice would you give your 14-year-old self?

NIALL “I suppose I was probably quite an annoying teenager. I had to teach myself to read a situation.”

LIAM “You just love life; you still do today. That’s why we love you. [To me] Niall had a really bad streak early on for always saying the wrong thing at the wrong time.”

NIALL “I just wasn’t used to all of this. But now I know what I’m doing. So I think I’d tell my 14-year-old self to maybe grow up a bit before you do this!”

LIAM “I’d tell myself to lighten up a bit. I was just
a bit too work-concentrated, because I really wanted to make it. I should have just enjoyed it a bit more. But maybe it helped us along, me being the serious one while everybody else was being more erratic?”

What makes you happy?

LIAM “I actually really like being undercover. Not under covers, although that does make me happy too, but like when I was in [New York toy store] FAO Schwarz and literally no one came up to me; I was just walking around with everyone completely unawares. It was really nice. Until this guy came over to me and was like, ‘Hey man, where’d you score the corn?’”

What’s your first memory of Cosmo?

LIAM “Actually it’s on one of our jets. We have Cosmo on the plane! And we did the cover for Cosmo. We were the first male group on the cover!”
