Lana Del Rey is “currently not together” with boyfriend Barrie-James O’Neill.
The Summertime Sadness singer has dated the Scottish musician since 2011. It was rumoured earlier this year that the couple were engaged after the 28-year-old was spotted wearing a large diamond ring but Lana recently confirmed they have actually broken up.
“We are currently not together,” she told Swiss outlet 20 Minuten. “He is a wonderful man. But there are certain things he has to overcome with. I will not give details. It was hard for our relationship. I was no longer feeling free. Let’s see how things go on from here.”
Barrie-James is a member of Scottish band Kassidy. The couple seemed to be very serious about each other, house-hunting together and causing a stir about an engagement earlier in the year. But Lana recently hinted at how challenging their relationship could be.
“I would be lying if I said it wasn’t difficult. He is a much darker character than most people I’ve ever met,” she shared with British newspaper The Sun. “We always joke around about how we should have found simpler counterparts.
Lana certainly has her own dark side and battled with alcoholism when she was a teenager. While she is now sober, she admitted to the newspaper that it has been a struggle recently to remain that way.
“I’ve loosened up a lot which means before, when I was depressed I wanted drink and now I am feeling good I still want to drink,” she laughed. “But I think back to when I was in high school and I’d been taking a lot of drugs. I was self-medicating and needed to stop. You can’t get through your day and work like this unless you are Keith Richards. So I stopped and I had to or none of this would’ve happened.”
