Liam Payne thinks his drunken Twitter rants are "deep".

The One Direction star and his bandmates Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan all have a huge following on the social networking site and often entertain their fans with funny posts.

Liam, 20, has also tweeted cryptic messages about heartbreak in the past and hit back at comments that he had put on weight. While laying his cards on the table online seems a good idea at the time, the singer occasionally regrets it.

"I have a few drunken rants sometimes on Twitter…Yeah they are quite deep, sometimes I go in hard, it’s not good. Then I wake the next morning and it’s like - 'Ahhh, old news,'" he admitted to BBC Radio 1's DJ Scott Mills.

Earlier this week MailOnline posted a clip that seemed to show Zayn and Louis smoking marijuana and discussing drugs while in Peru. It caused a huge fan backlash, with many young followers creating bizarre hashtag #SkinFor1D and posting naked pictures of themselves.

Liam took to Twitter to discourage girls from participating and admits in the interview that social networking has a dark side.

"In a way, yeah, because sometimes they can be horrible places, with the wrong people on there," he said of the sites.

"You tend to notice the bad things on there, but that’s the thing, you have to waiver those out and notice the good things. How can we have a hate relationship with social media when it’s made us into this little monster?"

One Direction rose to fame after appearing on the 2010 version of The X Factor UK. They're now a massive global band and Harry, 20, admits they can feel out of touch with friends they had before hitting the big time.

"I think there’s things that we haven’t done that our friends have done," he mused. "But then I think there are a lot of things our friends would like to do that we’re doing. Like Liam said, we’ve done it differently but we wouldn’t change it for anything."
