Ne-Yo has promised his new record is “99.999998 per cent R&B”.
The 31-year-old star has dipped his toe into the electronic dance music scene recently, but insists he’s returning to what he knows best on his upcoming album Non Fiction. The release is due out later this year and Ne-Yo hopes it will appeal to his faithful fans.
“This album is 99.999998 per cent R&B,” he told Power 105.1's The Breakfast Club. “I can’t completely abandon that fan base, because, as I said, they kept the lights on for a very long time. I still got some stuff that can live in that [EDM] world, but there’s so much R&B on this album that I had to find something that could live in that world but could also make sense on the album.”
The musician is worried some of his original fans feel “abandoned” thanks to his dance tracks such as Let Me Love You (Until You Learn To Love Yourself). While he is fiercely proud of how diverse his sound has become, he doesn’t want people to think he’s forgotten about what earned him success in the first place.
“I had heard something like that being said, and nothing could be farther from the truth. I’ma keep the lights on; I’ma make the money. But I’m also gonna make the music that feels good to me. But at the same time, I do understand where that came from,” he said.
Ne-Yo gave the first play of his new single with Jeezy called Money Can’t Buy yesterday.
