Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis return to the Barbican for their third International Associate residency this summer.

The world-renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis (JLCO) return to the Barbican for their third International Associate residency this summer.

Following on from critically-acclaimed visits in 2010 and 2012, audiences will once again have an opportunity to experience music performed by some of America's finest jazz musicians.

The programme in 2014 features:
• A ground-breaking collaboration with the Sachal Jazz Ensemble from Pakistan (30 June)
• Wynton Marsalis in conversation, discussing the importance of arts education and jazz’s role in promoting cultural and social understanding (1 July)
• The Best of Blue Note Records – a celebration of the label’s 75th birthday (2 July)
• A Creative Learning programme, featuring the newly assembled Young Jazz East Big Band
• Freestage performances by Guildhall School of Music & Drama musicians and emerging artists throughout the residency

A ground-breaking collaboration will kick-start this year’s residency on Monday 30 June: The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and the Sachal Jazz Ensemble will perform new arrangements, blending the sonorities of modern and ancient instruments and using the jazz form to integrate American values of blues and swing with sophisticated and highly-evolved Eastern music traditions.

This project furthers JLCO's commitment to cross-cultural understanding. The Sachal Jazz Ensemble is a group of virtuosic master musicians from Pakistan who incorporate Eastern instruments such as sitar, sarod, tabla, and dholak into new interpretations of jazz standards that are informed by their own rich musical tradition. The group has proven to be a viral sensation with nearly 700k views of their interpretations of Dave Brubeck’s Take Five and REM’s Everybody Hurts on YouTube.
