Ellie Goulding has revealed she looks at men and relationships in a different way to how she used to.

The British singer is known for songs about the opposite sex including I Need Your Love, which she recorded with Calvin Harris, and Goodness Gracious. But in a new interview the 27-year-old admitted she is single and happy after changing her attitude towards romance.

“'I [used to] put men on a pedestal. I decided to remedy that, and that’s why I’m single now,” she told the US edition of Cosmopolitan magazine. “They’d be everything [but] I’ve realised I don’t need a guy. I’ve got amazing, awesome, stupid friends in the best way possible.”

The Burn singer had a two year relationship with British Radio 1 DJ Greg James. She has also dated American musician Skrillex and was most recently linked to Dougie Poynter from British boyband McFly. While she may have gone through her fair share of heartbreak, it has helped Ellie gain a better understanding of herself.

“A lot of despair in breaking up with someone is thinking about how you’re going to cope in the future,” she explained. “But not being completely present prevents you from being happy and alive. As soon as you stop relying so heavily on what happened in the past, you end up being able to deal.”

It isn’t the first time Ellie has spoken about her previous relationships. During an interview with the UK edition of Cosmopolitan, the Starry Eyed singer warned her fans that they should always stay true to themselves.

“You should never change for anyone. And I say that because I've done it before; I've changed for a man," she recalled. "I was so, so in love with him that I'd have done anything. I look back now and think, 'What an idiot!'”
