Pete Townshend’s song from The Who became the themes for three CSI shows and now he is going to debut an original show in the new show The Americans.
While the music of Pete Townshend has been used on TV before, most notably as the themes for CSI (Who Are You), CSI: NY (Baba O’Reilly) and CSI: Miami (Won’t Get Fooled Again), he has never written a song specifically for the medium until now.
Townshend and The Americans composer Nathan Barr have written It Must Be Done which will appear in the April 30 edition of the show on FX.
The Americans has used Townshend’s music before, most notably the Who song Eminence Front.
Townshend told Billboard how he wrote the song with Barr:
What I was struck by was that Nate composes on the cello, an instrument my partner and orchestrator Rachel (Fuller) uses, so I have listened to a lot of cello music and I have really fallen in love with it. We exchanged ideas (between England and Los Angeles) and I was immediately struck by this very evocative piece he had written, very plaintive. I added some guitar, then came up with some lyrics.
Townshend’s Let My Love Open the Door will also be part of the upcoming season opener of Showtime’s Californication on April 13.
