Gwyneth Paltrow’s mother Blythe Danner reportedly “begged” her daughter not to divorce.

Gwyneth and Chris Martin announced they were ending their marriage on Tuesday, via a statement on the actress’ website Goop.com.

While the split is said to be very amicable, Blythe apparently wanted Gwyneth to reconsider the breakup.

"[She's] really upset. She loves Chris," an insider tells Us Weekly. "She begged Gwyneth not to end it, that he's a good man. But Gwyneth had to do what she felt was best.

"They really tried to make it work. You could tell something was wrong, though, over the last few months. You could see a sadness in each of their eyes."

Gwyneth has often spoken of her respect for her parents’ marriage, and how long it lasted.

Blythe, 71, was married to Bruce Paltrow for 33 years until his death in 2002.

"I asked my dad once, 'How did you and Mom stay married for 33 years?' And he said, 'Well, we never wanted to get divorced at the same time,'" Gwyneth told the UK edition of Glamour magazine last year. "I think that's what happens.

When two people throw in the towel at the same time, then you break up, but if one person's saying, 'Come on, we can do this,' you carry on."

The Iron Man star and Chris are currently in the Bahamas with their children Apple, nine, and Moses, seven. The pair are apparently putting up a strong united front for the sake of the kids, although there is definitely “tension”.

"There are no signs of any PDA, holding hands, or kissing on the beach. There was definitely a noticeably intimate distance," the source said, adding that the children appear to be "happy and playful”.
