Idina Menzel’s Broadway comeback is proving to be an early hit.
The celebrated actress and singer, who made her Broadway debut in 1996 with Rent, stars in the new stage musical If/Then, an original story of two people leading parallel lives.
Variety reports the show raked in more than $900,000 in its first week of previews.
The figure surpasses ticket sales from Rocky and The Bridges of Madison County, according to the outlet.
If/Then landed on the Great White Way after a successful run in Washington, DC.
Producers have enjoyed heightened interest in the show in the wake of Oscar buzz surrounding Idina’s recent work on Academy Award-winning animated film Frozen.
The actress infamously took the stage to perform her song from the movie musical, Let It Go, at the prize-giving earlier this month, when she was introduced by John Travolta as “Adele Dazeem”.
The LA Times reports a fake playbill notice for If/Then circulated soon after on Twitter, in which Idina’s name was replaced by her “alter-ego”, Adele.
The notice also included her credits in “Nert” (Rent) and “Wickedly” (Wicked).
While John apologised profusely for the gaffe, Idina reportedly took it in stride.
“She laughed it off. She thought it was so funny. She was like, 'What are you going to do?'" an insider told E! News earlier this month.
Idina meanwhile is preparing for the official opening night of If/Then, scheduled for March 27.
Gushing over the show, she recently told Broadway.com she was thrilled to return “home” to Broadway.
“I’ve experienced the beauty of working on original musicals and was eager to find a project where the material was exciting and new and spoke to my heart. I’m thrilled to have finally found it - an original musical with a complex, flawed and surprising central character that I cannot wait to bring to life onstage,” she said.
“I have loved collaborating with Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey on the creation of this character. And it is such a blessing to be reunited with [director] Michael Greif, who launched my career with Rent, and [producer] David Stone, who took such good care of me with Wicked. I am extremely excited about If/Then and very much look forward to returning home to Broadway.”
