Ellie Goulding was “a bit crazy” as a teen.

The singer says she went through a very rebellious goth phase, complete with piercings and black hair.

According to Ellie, she was confused about the direction she was heading in.

“I definitely had a period of drinking and being a bit crazy. I had no idea what my future was going to be then,” the singer said in an interview for Sky Arts, reports UK newspaper The Mirror.

The British star went on to talk about growing up in a very poor council estate and starting work at 12 years old in a hair salon.

Ellie says she almost ended up in real trouble, but luckily things changed towards her late teens.

“I very nearly did go down that path, I was a bit of a rebel when I was 14,” she said, admitting she also took drugs back then. “People would call me a goth, I had long black hair which was real, I had piercings and I liked heavy metal music, and the rest of it.”

The 27-year-old is thankful to have turned her life around, and says she could never have imagined the level of success she now enjoys. Ellie describes how she couldn’t even land a singing role in school plays, yet now she is a global star.

“I never got a named part when I was young,” she said. “But we had an Operatic Society around where I lived and I auditioned to be in the chorus and they called back and asked if I wanted to be Dick Whittington and that was the first time I was acting and singing and I got into theatre.”

Ellie performed for Prince William and Kate Middleton at their 2011 wedding, and admits it was terrifying. “It was the scariest moment of my entire life,” she said.
