Demi Lovato has reminded people that she's "human".

The 21-year-old singer has been through a tough time and spent time in rehab in 2010 to work through "physical and emotional issues".

She later acknowledged that she had struggled with an eating disorder as well as alcohol and drug abuse.

Now the star has taken to Twitter to voice her opinion on the way people treat one another.

"There's nothing more upsetting and hurtful than people having no regards to someone's private life and using the web to bring people down.

"Why?" she queried.

"The things people do can affect/hurt others. Even if you don't think I see things.. I'm not a celebrity, I'm an artist & most importantly human. (sic)"

Since overcoming her personal troubles, the singer tries to inspire fans going through a hard time with her music and her book Staying Strong: 365 Days a Year.

On a more lighthearted note, Demi revealed an embarrassing moment she had recently encountered.

"In case you were wondering... Bowling lanes ARE slippery but do NOT work like slip and slides.... Wish someone woulda told me that.." she tweeted.

""I GET KNOCKED DOWN BUT I GET UP AGAIN AND YOU'RE NEVER GONNA GET ME DOWN!!!!" #storyofmyLIFE (sic)"

Luckily Demi has a strong support network of friends around her, including celebrity pal Selena Gomez, who recently also spent two weeks in rehab, which her rep confirmed was not substance related.

Demi has always been a sensitive person and recently opened up about what makes her cry.

"I'm so emotional. I cry all the time. One of my friends told me how proud she was of me and how I've come so far [and that's the last time I cried]," she admitted.
