Robin Thicke reportedly flew to Canada to try to convince Paula Patton to save their marriage.

It was announced yesterday that the Blurred Lines singer and Paula have split following an eight-year union.

TMZ reports that the split occurred on Friday, with Robin promptly cancelling some shows so he could discuss things with Paula in person. He has blamed vocal problems for his decision not to take to the stage.

"The cancellation was solely so he could sit with his wife and try to change her mind," alleges TMZ.

"We're told Paula - who is shooting a movie in Vancouver - and Robin had a long, face-to-face talk ... both acknowledging they had not been getting along and frequently arguing.

"Our sources say in the end Robin realised Paula was determined to end the marriage and reluctantly agreed, but was very upset. We're told she was also upset."

Robin and Paula were childhood sweethearts, meeting each other as teenagers. They have three-year-old son Julian together.

In a statement to People magazine, Paula said that the split was mutual and that they remain on good terms.

"We will always love each other and be best friends, however, we have mutually decided to separate at this time," Paula said.

The split comes after a mammoth year for Robin, which saw him top charts around the world with his smash hit single Blurred Lines, featuring Pharrell Williams.

He also made headlines when he twerked on stage with Miley Cyrus at the MTV Video Music Awards in August.

Sources have come forward to say the split was a "long time coming" and that news of the separation comes as no surprise.

"Their marriage was unravelling for a long time," an insider told Us Weekly.

"It is not a shock to Robin or Paula, and it is something they have discussed for a long time,” another source divulged.
