Neil Patrick Harris was honoured by the Drama League on Monday night.

The 40-year-old How I Met Your Mother actor was the toast of the organisation's 30th Annual Musical Celebration of Broadway at New York City's Pierre Hotel, which he attended with partner David Burtka.

Whoopi Goldberg hosted the affair, with guests including Zachary Levi, Judith Light and Kal Penn.

Playbill reports the show featured performances of musical selections from Neil's acclaimed career, spanning his work in theatre, television and film.

Previous honourees include Liza Minnelli, Kristin Chenoweth, Angela Lansbury, Patti LuPone, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Chita Rivera, among others.

Guest performances kept the audience entertained, with Harvey Fierstein, Audra McDonald and Zachary Levi among those taking the stage.

Neil is gearing up for another Broadway turn in just a few weeks.

The star will begin performances for Hedwig and the Angry Inch on March 29.

As Playbill reports, he previously performed on the Great White Way in Assassins and in the New York Philharmonic's production of Company.

The Drama League "is dedicated to creating transformative interactions between artists and audiences. above and beyond the performances they experience," according to its mission statement.

Monday night's black-tie event supports the organisation's educational initiatives for young artists.
