It was announced earlier that the boyband, made up of Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan, had been crowned Global Recording Artists of 2013 by the IFPI.

One Direction, who were put together on the 2010 series of the UK X Factor, signed with Simon's label Syco Records after coming third in the reality TV show.

"So one direction were the biggest selling artists in 2013. I know how much they put into this record from start to finish. Very proud.

"I have said it before and will say it again...the greatest group of fans. Why can't there be an award for the best fans at the Grammys

"Or the Brits? It seems crazy they don't. Is there a reason? (sic)," Simon wrote in a succession of tweets.

The 54-year-old music mogul has just got back from a trip to New York, informing his fans that his dogs went crazy when he walked through the door of his London home.

He commented it was "a great feeling" to receive the mutt love.

He also divulged to fans how the flight over the Atlantic was, and what occupied his thoughts.

"I flew British airways. Went to watch a movie in their movie library section. You can choose from four movies. Almost too many.

"Apart from the smallest film library in the world everything else was great.

"I was thinking on the flight how many great records there were last year. The music business feels exciting again. No rules. (sic)" he tweeted.
