Macklemore text Kendrick Lamar after the Grammys to tell him he "got robbed".

The American rapper, who performs as a duo with Ryan Lewis, scooped four awards at last night's Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and Best Rap Song.

He beat hip-hop artist Kendrick in the four categories he won, but was quick to text his pal with his feelings on the matter.

"You got robbed. I wanted you to win. You should have. It's weird and sucks that I robbed you. I was gonna say that during the speech. Then the music started playing during my speech, and I froze.

"Anyway, you know what it is. Congrats on this year and your music. Appreciate you as an artist and as a friend. Much love (sic)," Macklemore wrote, taking a screen shot of the message and uploading it to his Instagram account.

Next to the post he explained the message in depth, expressing how much he thinks Kendrick deserved the accolade for Best Rap Album.

Despite his obvious upset over Kendrick's loss, Macklemore, real name Ben Haggerty, also showed some gratitude for his wins.

"My text to Kendrick after the show. He deserved best rap album... I'm honored and completely blown away to win anything much less 4 Grammys. But in that category, he should have won IMO. And that's taking nothing away from The Heist.

"Just giving GKMC it's proper respect.. With that being said, thank you to the fans. You're the reason we were on that stage tonight. And to play Same Love on that platform was a career highlight. The greatest honor of all. That's what this is about. Progress and art. Thank you. #grammys (sic)," he wrote.

Macklemore performed track Same Love alongside Madonna while 34 couples, many same-sex, were married live.
